Comment on New Norco Cargo Bikes by Joe LaFortune

I just purchased the Norco Birota cargo trike a week ago and am thrilled to death with it, but there are some cautionary remarks I would offer. First of all, the trike is well-designed and well-equipped with a quick-release to separate the cargo box from the body when you need to do maintenance work. It also has a quick release seat post that is easily securable with a cable lock to the frame. The trike features very effective front and rear lights as well as lights in the pedals, but be aware the front and rear lights are static only and have no additional flash or blinky modes. The front light is very good at lighting up dark trails as it is situated low on the front of the frame. A cargo cover and people cover is also supplied as well as pannier racks, a rear carrier and rear fender with mudguard in addition to a full chain guard. Essentially, the trike is an ice cream bike with an big empty cargo box instead of an ice cream freezer, so steering the cargo box takes some getting used to. It can be squirrelly and unweildly until you learn how to control it, but it avoids jack-knifing by two padded bars beneath the cargo bed that hit the frame and limit just how far the cargo bed can be turned. While that makes for wide turns, it is much better than the Nihola. Fortunately with two front caliper brakes and a rear coaster brake it can be stopped very efficiently. I recommend relying on the coaster brake and ensuring the caliper brakes are tuned equally or you risk the trike being pulled in one direction rather sharply if the front brakes are not equalized. A very handy feature is the locking nut on the front brakes that are very adept at keeping the bike still even on sharp hills with weight in the cargo bed. When steering, especially at speed, the rear can feel like it's fish-tailing and the rider needs to be aware of their balance to ensure they aren't thrown off. I recommend adding some counter-weight with a full pannier/saddle bag set up, as I have done that both increases the cargo carrying capacity and firms up the rear end better. As for hauling, it seems to have more capacity than any other cargo bike on the market as far as I have seen. I have carried six 24's of beer and 9 six-packs without using a single bungee cord. It can manage 300lbs without too much difficulty, but riding up inclines and hills will prove to be a challenge with heavy weight in the front. While it can handle 4 kids with seat-belts, the benches are flat and the backs upright, making for an uncomfortable ride if the ride is more than 30-40 minutes. Only one adult should ever ride in it due to weight and space restrictions (34" length, 24" wide and 19" deep). Be aware the cargo cover is not rain resistant, but the people cover is. Overall, I am very satisfied even though initially I found number of the bolts were falling out and needed to be replaced by larger bolts than it was supplied with. Locking nuts are a must, by the way, as the trike will be strained and stressed with cargo and riding.
